The diver who helped save a cathedral. The history behind the William Walker 1869 name.

In the early twentieth century, cracks began to appear in Winchester Cathedral. Its foundations rested on waterlogged ground, and the building was at risk of further subsidence.
The solution required work underwater. In 1906, professional diver William Walker joined the effort to reinforce the foundations. Working in near-total darkness beneath the cathedral, he placed concrete and helped prepare the foundations for the next stages of the rescue.
Walker worked there between 1906 and 1911. The cathedral continues to commemorate his contribution to saving the building.
The William Walker 1869 brand, established in 2025, takes its name from him. Diving imagery appears in its visual identity and on the packaging of the Connecticut and Maduro ranges.
